My daughter introduced me to a new book series that is the kind of book that takes over all of your time. It is the Maximum Ride series by James Patterson.
It is about a group of kids that have been genetically altered with bird DNA and can fly. They are in the midst of a plot by evil mad scientists, and it is up to the kids to save the world.
It is a really good series and has succeeded in consuming most of my spare time this week. My favorite use of spare time.
Today I did a web search to see if I could find the book any where, and I did find it on Amazon. For $98.00. Oh my. Should my son be carrying this expensive book around with him? Yes. It is just a book after all. Once he is done with it though, it is going in a special place on the bookshelf. Ouch! $98.00.
Percy Jackson is a young boy who finds out that he is a demi-god; a half-blood. Half Greek god and half human.
The book is set in current times and the Greek gods are real, but they have adapted to modern society a bit. There is a ruckus about Zeus’ master lightning bolt being stolen and Percy and two of his friends have to go on a mission to get it back before the gods go to war.
The book is action packed with humor around every corner. It is great for all ages. My daughter at 12 has read it so many times that she practically has it memorized, and my 8 year old son has read it too. It took him a bit longer to get through it, but he really enjoyed it.
As with most books, it has much more in it than the movie does.
LOVE the book. Of course, the rest of the series is great too.
I love to read, and choose to read instead of watching TV in the evenings. I am going to share what I am reading each week and post some book reviews and maybe others will discover some great new books.
I started reading teen books in order to read ahead of my daughter so that I knew what she was reading. Some of them have hooked me.
One of my favorite books is Goose Girl by Shannon Hale. It is the first in a series call The Books of Bayern.
The story is about a princess who is sent to another country to marry the prince of that country as a strategic political move. On the way there, she is betrayed and she barely escapes with her life.
Our heroine makes it to the city on her own and pretends to be a peasant in order to survive, and she begins ending the castle flock of geese. She finds out that she has special powers, and eventually needs to let everyone know who she is, but carefully because her imposter would like her dead.
She makes many friends among the people she works with, and the story has some very good messages regarding internal strength. The characters have many dimensions and you learn more about each one in the subsequent books.
